About a month ago, Universo MOLA Fashion Week took place, the only sustainable fashion week in Latin America, was held for the first time in Bogotá, Colombia. There, we could see how sustainable fashion is used both in the showcases and outside them, thanks to the brands, the attendees, and the outfits they wore. Some of the trends that stood out were upcycling, the layering , and natural fabrics.
Upcycling
Some of the most striking outfits at the event featured garments transformed into bold, revitalized pieces. For example, the looks of Jorge Preciado and Laura Agudelo (@lapesadademoda) dazzled thanks to their intervened jackets.
Preciado used three jackets customized with phrases on the back — one reading, ‘I know that the ones who love us will miss us.’, ‘It's hard but it's harder to ignore it’, and ‘wish you were here’. These applications were made from fabric letters, and the three jackets were created by the Mexican brand Hussar (@hussar.store).

Secondly, there is the look of Agudelo with her jacket made from remnants left by the textile industry for the Colombian brand Isadora Martin (@isadora.martinco). Her jacket was characterized by the patchwork in smooth fabrics in earth tones, decorated with wool details and embroidery on the left front.
Both looks have an unusual reconstruction and construction, but also details that give an impactful touch to the garments, such as fabric letters or embroidery. Details that can be applied to make a simple transformation, but that give a new air to garments you already own.
Layering
The second trend observed at UMFW was layering — a practice that involves overlapping garments within a single outfit, ideal for cold climates. Most of the layering was done on the upper body, with combinations like shirts and corsets, or mesh t-shirts and tops.
This practice allows garments to be used differently from how they were originally designed, making better use of the pieces already in the closet.
Natural fabrics
The latest trend is fabrics made from natural materials. The attendees of Universo MOLA Fashion Week used everything from garments with light and fresh fabrics, such as linen, wide-legged pants, to garments such as ruanas and vests with materials like cotton and wool.
UMFW attendees made the space their own with their outfits, finding new ways to create stylish looks through alternative uses and consumption of fashion. looks through alternative uses and consumption of fashion.
