How did it begin, and where are we headed?

Translated by: Miguel Martinez, Written by: Vanessa Ramirez

For years, the prevailing idea was that genuine trends, sophistication, and value in the fashion industry had to be imported from abroad. Yet, more than a decade ago, a different narrative began to be woven from the heart of the region. It was in this climate of critical reflection and urgent demand for socio-environmental change was born Universo MOLA.

Developed as the international sustainable fashion programme of the Fundación Entre Soles y Lunas Based in Montevideo, Uruguay, the project emerged with a clear purpose: to redefine fashion across our continent and build bridges towards a regenerative model driven by pride in our own identity.

“The issue is not only how much clothing costs, but who has the power over what we perceive as valuable.”  says Valentina Suarez founder of Universo MOLA, on her social media.

The Starting Point

Universo MOLA did not emerge as a simple exhibition platform, but as a direct response to the challenges affecting the global textile industry. Today, after ten years of building bridges between Latin America and the world, with a presence and milestones across the region and Europe, the project has shown that fashion is a powerful tool for social, economic, and cultural transformation.

What do we do today?

Through its different projects, Universo MOLA supports the growth of different sustainable brands across the region by connecting them with market opportunities, academic partnerships, and international networks. With this integrated approach, Universo MOLA has developed a range of interconnected projects that respond to the diverse needs of the ecosystem.

An identity that no longer asks for permission

People discovering Universo MOLA for the first time realise that this space does not promote a superficial or commercialised form of “green fashion”. Instead, it offers a profound reconnection with our roots and regions. We believe in the power of collective action, honest processes, and the ability to weave new futures through design.
