The Uruguayan leather sector continues its upward trajectory in 2024, registering a significant increase in exports during the first nine months of the year. According to data from the Uruguay XXI Institute, leather shipments and their manufactures reached 98 million dollars, which represents an increase of 17% compared to the same period of the previous year.
This growth is due to greater international demand for leather products, especially in markets such as Europe and North America, where quality and durability are valued. In addition, the diversification of the supply, with products such as shoes, wallets and accessories, has allowed Uruguayan companies to access new market niches.
September was a particularly outstanding month, with exports that reached 12 million dollars, 50% more than in September 2023. This boost is attributed to the acceleration of shipments during the second half of the year, consolidating the sector as one of the most dynamic in the country's economy.
Although the sector's share of total Uruguayan exports is still modest (around 1%), Uruguayan leather is positioned as a niche product with great growth potential.
