In a vibrant fusion of culture, fashion and sustainability, the Ojaláb MarketFest was held on September 21 at the iconic Starr Foundation Hall of the Parsons School of Design, in New York. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the event, organized in collaboration with the Parsons School of Fashion, showcased the diverse and dynamic landscape of Latin American fashion, challenging traditional norms of the global industry. The day highlighted the talent and cultural richness of 25 ethical brands from Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Argentina - including Alitza Garcia, Muth, Guayaba Agria and Salvárea - all committed to sustainability and responsible production. Instead of following conventional seasonal collections, the designers presented pieces that reflect the essence of their brands, redefining Latin American fashion and sustainable fashion as a lifestyle.
The creations on display combined a rich variety of materials and traditions, with almost 98% of the brands led by women, which underlines the important role they play in the future of Latin American fashion.
Attendees also enjoyed discussion panels, led by experts such as Carolina Obregón and Edward Cardimona. The topics addressed included the role of sustainability in fashion and the future of ethical design, with interventions by key figures such as Juliana Hincapie (Johanna Ortiz) and Alfonso Escolar (Myzelio). These conversations highlighted the importance of innovation and responsibility in an industry often questioned for its environmental impact.
The event culminated with an immersive fashion show, an authentic celebration of Latin American style, animated by choreographed movements and styling by experts from the Parsons School of Fashion. Accessories, jewelry and garments from emerging brands were presented in a captivating show, consolidating the region's commitment to authenticity and ethics, and positioning Latin America as a benchmark for innovation and sustainability in global fashion.
