Opening the wardrobe and choosing what to wear is an everyday act that seems simple; however, the life of a garment does not begin in the shop nor end in your wardrobe. Have you ever wondered how it gets there? Behind every seam lies a Global Value Chain (GVC), a complex network spanning continents, trend algorithms, and millions of workers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The hunt for trends and Fast Fashion<\/b><\/h4>\n

Months before production begins, a creative phase gets underway alongside a massive data analysis carried out by agencies such as<\/span> World\u2019s Global Style Network<\/span><\/a> \u00a0(WGSN), which analyses social media, cultural movements and consumer behaviour to predict the colours, textures and cuts that will dominate the market.\u00a0<\/span>The traditional model used to take 6 to 9 months; now, with <\/span>Ultra Fast Fashion<\/span><\/i> from brands such as Shein, this has been cut to just 10 to 15 days, according to <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>McKinsey & Company<\/span><\/a>. Furthermore, once the concept of the garment has been defined, the technical spec sheet is drawn up, which is the garment\u2019s architectural blueprint, sent straight to the factories with every detail needed for production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fibres and resources<\/b><\/h4>\n

This stage marks the start of textile production, a process shaped by the nature of its inputs, whether natural or chemical fibres. According to the<\/span> Materials Market Report<\/span><\/a> by Textile Exchange, textile production reached 132 million tonnes, highlighting an alarming reliance on non-renewable resources. Petroleum-based synthetics dominate with 69%, led by polyester (59%), which is highly polluting; cotton accounts for 24% and demands a great deal of water; and the rest is split between cellulosic fibres (6%) and animal fibres (1%). This linear model highlights the urgent need for recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hands-on: cutting and sewing\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

Once the raw material has been approved, the garment formally enters the heavy manufacturing stage. In industrial plants, the fabric is optimised using CAD software to arrange patterns and minimise fabric waste. Skilled workers then assemble collars, sleeves, and fastenings. According to Capital<\/span> World Group<\/span><\/a> (2026), manufacturing is heavily concentrated in Asia, led by China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and India, alongside countries such as Turkey, Italy, Germany, the US, Indonesia and Pakistan. In addition, the Global Living Wage Coalition (GLWC) reports that the industry employs 75 million people (1% of the world\u2019s population), of whom 75% are women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Quality control and international logistics<\/b><\/h4>\n

Before leaving the factory, clothing undergoes quality checks such as the ISO 105 standard for colour fastness, pressing, regulatory labelling, whether by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the US or the European Conformity (CE) mark, and RFID tracking chips. After this process, its global journey begins, and the<\/span> UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)<\/span><\/a> notes that around 80% of world trade travels by sea to logistics hubs, where it clears customs before being distributed to physical and online shops.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the shop to your doorstep<\/b><\/h4>\n

The journey ends at the point of sale: physical shops apply <\/span>visual merchandising strategies<\/span><\/i> (lighting, music and scents) to encourage purchases, while e-commerce triggers the <\/span>fulfilment process<\/span><\/i> and final home delivery. This last leg is the most costly and complex part of the logistics process, owing to traffic and individual distribution. So, once the bag has been delivered, the transaction is complete, and the garment finally takes its place in your wardrobe.<\/span><\/p>\n

The real cost behind your wardrobe<\/b><\/h4>\n

Every garment conceals a long journey: trend-forecasting algorithms, extracted natural resources, maritime transport and the manual labour of millions of people.
