It begins, quite simply, by opening your wardrobe and giving each garment a second chance. Whether worn out or pushed aside by changing trends, every piece of clothing represents a considerable amount of water, energy and human labour that has already been invested in its production. For this reason, extending the lifespan of our clothes is one of the most immediate and effective actions we can take to reduce the environmental impact caused by global overproduction.

Repair: the first line of defence against disposal

The first line of defence against premature disposal is repair. This practice seeks to restore the original functionality of a damaged garment through simple sewing or shoe-repair techniques, preventing a minor defect from turning it into waste and thereby extending its useful life. Simple actions such as replacing missing buttons, mending small tears, repairing loose hems or replacing faulty zips can significantly extend the amount of time a garment remains in use.

According to WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme), the impact of textile repair is directly reflected in the fact that more than 80% of repaired garments prevent the purchase of a new item, with an effectiveness rate of 82.2%. In practical terms, repairing a simple cotton T-shirt instead of discarding it can avoid the emission of more than 7.5 kg of CO₂ equivalent—a carbon footprint comparable to keeping an iron switched on continuously for more than a day.

Reuse: making the most of every garment's versatility

When a garment still retains its physical qualities, reuse is the best option, as it seeks to make the most of its versatility before considering any drastic alteration or disposal. It involves diversifying the ways and contexts in which a garment is worn, thereby maximising the number of times it can be used and reducing the need to buy new clothes. It also makes it possible to create new combinations with the clothes already in your wardrobe, adapt formal garments for everyday wear, exchange clothing with others and incorporate second-hand pieces into your wardrobe.

Globally, this approach is transforming our relationship with clothing. According to ThredUp's Resale Report 2026 , 60% of consumers already consider a garment's future resale value before buying it new, while almost half of younger shoppers actively reject low-quality clothing because it lacks the durability required to be reused or resold. In this way, a garment ceases to be a disposable good and instead becomes a versatile asset within a circular system.

Revalue: transforming waste into a new resource

When a garment loses its shape or suffers irreparable wear, it enters the revaluation stage, where the principles of the circular economy can be applied at home to give it greater aesthetic or functional value. Through embroidery, dyeing, patches or the transformation of fabric scraps into new objects such as bags or cleaning cloths, the life cycle of textiles can be extended while helping to challenge the culture of disposability.

A clear example of this is a 2025 initiative involving the Valparaíso Natural History Museum and the Sembra Association, which recovered more than 114 kg of clothing and transformed it into thermal insulation, textile paper and decorative items. This initiative demonstrates how turning waste into resources can encourage more responsible consumption in response to the environmental impact of fashion.

Dressing with purpose

Adopting these three actions does not require major investments, but rather a change in the way we view what we already own. Every button mended, every garment styled in a different way and every textile given a new purpose represents a concrete victory against the culture of disposability and overproduction.

Ultimately, true textile sustainability begins with respect for the water, energy and human labour that made each garment possible. Extending the life of our clothes is not merely a strategy for practising the circular economy at home; it is also a daily commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and redefining our relationship with what we wear.

Reparar, reutilizar y revalorizar para un vestir sostenible Extender la vida útil de tus prendas mediante pequeñas reparaciones y nuevas combinaciones es la acción más rápida para reducir tu huella...
[553,696
809,810,811,375,807,812,803,672,804,805,500,806,556,808
post-69983","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-mola-mag","category-oraculo-mola","tag-ahorro-de-agua","tag-ahorro-de-energia","tag-co","tag-consumo-responsable","tag-papel-textil","tag-recursos","tag-reparar","tag-residuos-textiles","tag-reutilizar","tag-revalorizar","tag-ropa","tag-tenidos","tag-upcycling","tag-wrap
["GET
